2011 Rendezvous
This years Rendezvous was held at the Tehama County Fairgrounds in Red Bluff. It has been sometime since the Rendezvous was held in Northern California, and the attendance at the event was outstanding. They had the event at the same time that a Trail Trial Competition and a Cancer Relay Ride was going on, and they had a full house. They decided to not charge any admission, and opened the event to the public. The event was well publicized, and the public was definitely interested. They had 500 tickets available for the Saturday Banquet, and sold them all. They had classes in a wide variety of topics, with something for everybody. Available were: Trail Trials, BLM Adoptions, Clinics, Classes, Vendors, Cowboy Church, Kids Classes, Western Art Show, Forest Service demos, and more. Opening Ceremonies to include Color Guard, United States Marine Corps, and don't forget the Dutch Oven Cooking!!This year’s event was so successful that the State Board decided to hold the event there in 2012 as well. Dates and times will be determined at a later date.
During the Friday Night Banquet our unit was honored with the 2010 State Education Award for all of our efforts put forth in the last year towards educating our members and the public in Backcountry Principles. The Criteria is as follows:
The education efforts of individuals and units throughout the state are deserving of special recognition. Education is a cornerstone and integral part of the organization’s purpose. Units who go the extra mile in their education efforts should be rewarded. BCHC sponsors an annual award to be given to the outstanding unit for their education programs. Our recommendation for the awards program is as follows:
Unit Award
A unit that promotes education-using teamwork.
A unit that participates in a variety of events, such as (but not limited to): parades, fairs, pack clinics, special events, etc.
A unit that has members who have participated in State sponsored programs such as the Gentle Use Program, the Wilderness Rider Program, the Masters program, etc.
A unit that has members who contribute articles for unit, state and/or the education newsletters.
2010 High Sierra Unit Top Hand Award
Each year we select one of our members to be recognized as the Unit’s “Top Hand”. Usually this task is the responsibility of the Unit President, but this year I wanted to do the selection a little different. During our December Board Meeting I asked the Board Members to vote for the person that they felt made the most contributions towards our goals during the 2010 year.
Our criteria is simple, whom among us did the most to:
1. To perpetuate the common sense use and enjoyment of horses in America’s backcountry and wilderness.
2. To work to insure that public lands remain open to recreational stock use.
3. To assist the various government and private agencies in their maintenance and management of said resource.
4. To educate, encourage and solicit active participation in the wise use of the backcountry resource by horsemen and the general public commensurate with our heritage.
I asked for the Board’s help with the selection because I felt there were several deserving people, and it was difficult to decide. This past year we were very active in public education and awareness of backcountry principles. Jim was one of the people that worked tirelessly in that regard. Jim and Bill See set up and manned informational booths at both Draft Horse and Mule Equipment Sales, as well as the Squaw Valley Mule Show. Jim also helped staff the State Booth at Mule Days, always promoting our cause. Jim and Bill also organized our fall, winter and Spring Rides, events very popular with our members.
Jim and Dick Cochran did an outstanding job in the public lands arena; attending public meetings and supporting our position for the Mineral King Draft Management Plan and the removal/renovation of backcountry ranger cabins. Jim assisted me in conducting a packing clinic at a youth summer camp for the California Waterfowl Association.
Anytime we needed help, Jim was there. Jim, thank you for your outstanding contribution to our unit. You have made us better, and we are all very thankful for that. Next time you see Jim shake his hand and tell him that you appreciate his service, as he most certainly deserves it.
